Every year developers from across Europe meet up at our technical conferences, and this year we’re delighted to let you know we will meet 15+16 May in Wesel, near Dusseldorf in western Germany. We return to the Welcome Hotel in Wesel situated on the banks of the Lower Rhine with wonderful views of the river and great transport links to all parts of Europe. It’s the one event in the Omnis calendar you cannot afford to miss!

We will provide two days packed with exciting and practical technical content that will be guaranteed to accelerate your application development projects with Omnis Studio. Along with the organized sessions there are plenty of opportunities to meet & chat to our technical staff, network with other experienced Omnis developers, exchange ideas and knowhow, or discuss possible partnerships – and during the evenings, you can relax at the special BBQ we’ve arranged for you, socialize with fellow developers, and watch the passing ships on the Rhine in the evening sunshine.

What the conference offers

The packed programme includes live presentations on key areas of Omnis technology for web, mobile and desktop application development, as well as sessions by invited speakers on in-depth technical aspects of app development, demos of successful customer apps, business topics on marketing and business models for Omnis applications, as well as short “flash sessions” on technical tips & tricks. Here is a summary of the topics we will cover:

  • Omnis Studio 11 – the next release. You’ll have to attend to see these exciting features coming to Omnis in this year’s releases.
  • Omnis Studio Now – find out what it is and how developers have been taking advantage of this great new service.
  • Omnis noCode – see for yourself this great new tool that will accelerate web & mobile app development.
  • UX & UI
– Insights and practical tips from experts about how to build better apps!
  • Omnis Roadmap and Q&A – hear about our product plans and ask our senior staff about any technical or business matter.
  • And more… check back regularly on our Events page to see updates to the conference programme, and details about speakers as we add them.

All conference sessions are presented in English and German, running side-by-side over the two days, so we try to cater to all developers from across Europe – in fact several of our staff and invited speakers are bi-lingual, so you won’t miss a single topic! All conference materials & presentation notes are provided in your preferred language, and many of our speakers provide useful example code and libraries for you to download.

Where the conference takes place

The conference will be held at the Welcome Hotel in Wesel near Dusseldorf, Germany, which is situated directly on the beautiful Rhine river and offers great conference rooms and very spacious rooms with a balcony or conservatory. Every year the Omnis Community likes to gather all in one place to share knowledge, swap code and ideas, find out about all the latest developments in the latest Omnis Studio, meet old friends and new, and generally have a good time while diving deep into Omnis – if that all sound good, then read on!

Omnis Software has always supported its developer community, with a focus on its attendance at the annual developer conferences – we always send key staff to talk about the latest releases, like Omnis Studio 11 (released in May), and to share insights about our upcoming product and business plans. We are therefore delighted to support and attend EurOmnis 2023, which this year returns in October 2023 to The Netherlands.

Conference sessions and the agenda are being finalized as we speak, but it is guaranteed that there will be a vast array of in-depth Omnis related sessions, fascinating use case studies, and many chances to interact and swap knowledge with other developers in each session – these are not lectures, each session is a chance for you to delve deep into a topic and ‘learn by doing’ collaboratively many valuable coding skills and practices. This year, the organizers tell us, familiar speakers and new presenters have committed to 28 different topics, in all aspects of Omnis coding, database programming, testing & deployment, app development lifecycle, and many features in the very latest Omnis Studio version 11 – plus there is a ‘Studio 101’ track dedicated to newcomers to Omnis, so all levels of Omnis knowledge are catered to.

Learn about the JavaScript Client from an expert!

One confirmed speaker is long-term Omnis developer Jim Pistrang, who has been immersed in the Omnis world since 1990, providing Omnis training, analysis, and programming for large and small corporations, while developing client-server, ultra-thin, and JavaScript applications using Omnis. Jim has developed an extensive JavaScript Client web application that is used by many employees on iPads, has over 60 JavaScript client forms, extracting and updating data from 300 Postgres database tables.

Jim’s double session will help you understand a successful JavaScript Client architecture, including testing, web deployment, and debugging. Each session will be accompanied by a heavily commented, custom-built Omnis Studio 11 library, available to all EurOmnis attendees, that illustrates the session details.

About the Conference

The EurOmnis Conference 2023 will be held in Arnhem, in The Netherlands, a great location for developers to attend from all parts of Europe & further afield, with convenient transport links by road, train and air – Arnhem is only about an hour’s train ride from Schiphol international airport.

  • Date: Sunday Oct 22 – Friday Oct 27
  • Location: Hotel Klein Zwitserland – Arnhem, Netherlands
  • FOUR packed days and evening sessions
  • Multiple tracks for you to ‘compose’ your own conference
  • Keynote, Roadmap & Tech support Q&As by Omnis Software
  • Meet & greet buffet on Sunday evening October 22
  • Depart after breakfast Friday, October 27
  • Many ‘fringe’ events and plenty of discussion on Omnis from morning till night!
  • Cost: all conference sessions, meals, single room for only 1350 €

The EurOmnis conference is a community event, and is organized by an enthusiastic team of Omnis developers, who combined have many decades of development and business experience of using Omnis Studio – we would like to thank the team: Doug Easterbrook, Gavin Foster, Mike Matthews, and Rob Mostyn and wish them every success with EurOmnis 2023. This will be a highlight in the Omnis calendar, so we strongly encourage you to check out the details of this year’s conference and sign up as soon as possible.

More details and registration are on the EurOmnis website: www.omnisworld.co.uk

The Omnis Software France team, Alain Teboul and Guillaume Ramanantsoa, was joined in Antananarivo, Madagascar by Andreas Pfeiffer from Germany, for the inaugural Omnis Developer Conference Africa on 23 November 2022 – and by all accounts and kind feedback we’ve been getting from attendees, it was a great success!

We are extremely grateful to Marcel Ramanantsoa, Director of CapData Software, and Osmosis Business Solutions (OBS OI) for organizing and hosting the event in Madagascar and for their warm welcome for the Omnis team and all conference attendees. Special thanks also to Augustin Andriamananoro, General Director of DGPP for sponsoring ODC Africa and helping us to promote Omnis Software in various digitalization projects for public administration in Madagascar. Prior to the conference, we were delighted to meet Augustin at the ministry to present our ambitions for Omnis Software in Madagascar and Africa.

We were delighted to present Omnis Software’s global strategy to everyone at the one-day conference, to demonstrate the latest Omnis Studio software and JavaScript client, and answer all technical questions from the 200 or so developers, students and senior officials who were present. Watch this video for a conference report:

The main objective of the event was to show off the full capabilities of Omnis Studio, to support the developer community in Madagascar, and to strengthen our presence in the African market – and this we feel has been firmly achieved. We look forward to working with all developers in Madagascar and right across Africa, and we wish you great success with Omnis!

And Btw – Omnis is 40!

Forty years ago in December 1981, the company released its first software product “OMNIS”, a database application tool for the Apple II designed by Cambridge graduate and programmer David Seaman. The company that created Omnis was called Blyth Computers, founded by Paul Wright and Geoff Smith in England in 1979, which started as an Apple computer dealer, but they very soon realized the potential great software could bring to businesses, startups, and hobbyists – and so Omnis was born!

Omnis was written back then using Apple Pascal, but also the UCSD Pascal environment, which enabled a simple port over to other popular machines of the time, including IBM computers running MS-DOS – so Omnis was always cross-platform, right from the beginning! Learn more About Omnis and its history on our website: www.omnis.net/about-omnis

And we’ll be celebrating the Omnis 40th Anniversary at our International Omnis Developer Conference in Dusseldorf in May 2022, so bring along all your great Omnis anecdotes!

The new Omnis Studio 10.2 release provides a wealth of new features and enhancements and focuses on two important objectives: Omnis Studio 10.2 offers a wealth of exciting new features to make your app development even faster and to enable you to make your apps even more appealing and user-friendly.

Innovations for building attractive apps with improved usability and a better UX

The first impression can be decisive for the success of an app, both in the market and among users within a company. Therefore Omnis Studio 10.2 includes many new features and enhancements that will make it easier and more fun for you to build beautiful apps:

  • A wealth of new and enhanced JavaScript controls including a new JS Split Button Control and enhancements to Edit Controls and Data Grids
  • Animations for a modern UX
  • JavaScript Client Themes to manage colors in your app
  • Scalable SVG icons and themed (JS only) to match the selected color scheme
  • Many new Window controls for desktop apps including a new Token Entry Field, the new Breadcrumb control, and enhancements to the Check Box control
  • Side Panels for desktop apps that slide out automatically (vertical panels containing clickable options or other content)
  • Toast Messages for desktop apps
  • Components can now better cater to touch devices

Designing beautiful apps is now easier than ever with new helpful tools including:

  • Position Assistance
in a remote form, report or window class design screen
  • Web Preview
for designing a JavaScript Remote form to preview the look and behavior at runtime in the end user’s browser

Omnis Studio 10.2 also makes localization for web & mobile apps easier so you can translate your apps to multiple languages:

  • Localization has been optimized, reducing data size for multi-language applications
  • German, French, Italian and Spanish are supported by default, while support for other languages can be added

New features to speed up your development and ease maintenance of your apps

  • The Omnis Remote Debugger has been further enhanced. You can now edit methods and code while stepping through live code in the Remote Debugger
  • Omnis Studio 10.2 now generates OpenAPI 3.0.0 definitions, as well as Swagger 2.0 definitions for a RESTful web service
  • Support of regular expressions in your Omnis code, or for Find and Replace via the PCRE2 library
  • General support for OAUTH2 authorization for the OW3 worker objects
  • Enhancements to the IMAP, HASH, and the FTP workers

With the new release you can increase performance for your server based, web and mobile apps:

  • The Linux Headless Server can now be run in MultiProcess Server (MPS) mode utilizing the multi-core processors on your server

And for those customers who want to convert an Omnis data file to either SQLite or PostgreSQL, this is much faster now as the DML emulator has been substantially re-written for Studio 10.2 to improve performance.

Due to the travel restrictions & bans on events that are in place due to Covid-19, we are unfortunately forced to postpone our Omnis 40th anniversary Conference planned for 16+17 June 2020 for an indefinite period.

Omnis has turned 40 in 2020 and how better to celebrate than at our annual conference with our fantastic developers, customers and friends – and for this extra special conference we have secured a simply stunning venue, a moated castle near Düsseldorf/Dortmund (we will provide free shuttles from the airport). So we invite you to join us, to help us celebrate our 40th anniversary, and to learn and share all the latest Omnis Studio technology, including all the great new features in Studio 10.2, as well as those in the pipeline on the Omnis roadmap, plus improved services that we will provide, with some exciting and important announcements regarding future Omnis products – so you really would not want to miss it!!

The main object of the Omnis conferences is for you to learn new Omnis technology, and to be able to put that knowledge to practical use in your business – the agenda is designed to tell you all about the latest Omnis Studio features, any features coming in the next release, and to provide you with a broad summary of any new propositions for products or services. After learning about the new technology at the conference, we know you will go away with new plans for your application projects and how you can move your business forward.

The sessions on the conference Agenda will be hosted by the top Omnis experts – our guest speakers will be amongst the best and most knowledgeable developers in the Omnis community, and key staff from our Consulting & Support teams and members of the core Omnis Engineering team will host sessions; the Board of Directors of Omnis Holdings Ltd and Omnis executive management will be present at this event and will also be available for one-on-one meetings. We will feature in-depth technical sessions on all aspects of the latest Omnis Studio product, including UI & form design, JavaScript programming, and deployment, as well as some very insightful case studies to show you how our partners have used Omnis Studio to create some very successful applications and businesses.

This conference is a multi language event with conference materials and presentations and sessions in English, German, French and Italian, so every Omnis developer will be able to participate.

We regret to announce that due to the increased risk of Coronavirus #Omnis Software has been forced to postpone the Omnis Developer Conference in Las Vegas scheduled for March 24-25, 2020. We will reschedule the event for later in the year.

At the heart of our developer conferences are the technical sessions, delivered by some of the top speakers in the Omnis world – and this time at the Hampton Inn Tropicana in Las Vegas, March 24+25, is no exception with some brilliant speakers from the Omnis community and senior staff from Omnis Software itself. The technical content you will see, and the knowledge you will acquire, pays for the conference fees many times over, so you really don’t want to miss it!

  • ThadFirst, we are delighted to be joined by Thad Bogert of ClienTrax, an experienced Omnis developer, a regular conference speaker, and at one time an Omnis technical support engineer. On the first conference day Thad will demo the Datafile To SQL Emulation Tool, which he helped to develop, working closely with the Omnis engineering team in the UK – the tool provides developers with a clear path for migrating Omnis data file based applications to utilize SQL backends such as PostgreSQL and SQLite. We are so grateful for Thad’s assistance with the development of this product and we are delighted he joins us at the conference.
  • BobThen we are delighted that Bob Mitchell, principal Omnis Engineer at Omnis Software in the UK and the main architect of the Omnis core, is able to attend the conference, and show you some of the great things in the current Omnis Studio, and the exciting new stuff coming in the future. On the first day Bob delves deep into the new features in Studio 10.2 (including the new MultiProcess server), then he steers you along the Product Roadmap. Then during the whole of the second day Bob devotes his time to showing you the new OW3 Workers (which can optimize apps with a heavy workload), RESTful Web Services & how to implement an HTTP/HTTPS application server, and he finishes with an overview of the enhancements in the Fat Client & controls used for developing desktop and Client/server apps.
  • JasonWe’re also thrilled that Jason Gissing joins us from the UK engineering team – Jason is the main engineer behind the JS Client & its UI controls. On the first day Jason hosts a Break-out session all about the new JavaScript components (incl Toolbar, Calendar, etc), then on day 2 Jason shows how you can use Node.js running inside the new JavaScript Worker to perform more or less any server based task, allowing you to build robust & scalable apps. He also delves deep into the JS Client and using CSS to enhance & augment the UI in your browser-based Omnis apps.

We feel confident that we have assembled a great program of technical content, delivered by some of the top speakers in the Omnis community, and we really don’t want you to miss it. The extent of technical knowledge you will acquire will repay for the conference fees many times over, so we really hope you can join us in Las Vegas in March.
