Using Omnis Studio, you can quickly and easily build all types of applications, for all business types and company scenarios, large and small – and the great thing about Omnis apps is that you can run them on desktops while in the office, or on tablets when you are at home, or on phones when travelling between meetings or client visits. Indeed, the Covid pandemic has demanded a more flexible approach to working, requiring access to data anywhere, and at any time – and so Omnis is perfect for creating apps for these times.

When you create an application using Omnis Studio you can plan the different layers: the database access layer (accessing any leading database), the business logic or methods as another layer, and then the UI or frontend as another layer. So with Omnis Studio, you can build forms and navigation that can run on desktops (window classes) or for remote access via a web browser or mobile app (JavaScript remote form) while re-using all the coding and methods in the database and business logic layers – all these can be built into one, single application and code base, providing local, remote or cloud access all-in-one. Which makes application development with Omnis Studio very quick and easy, with a high level of flexibility during development and for the whole project lifecycle.

Mobile & Web app development with Omnis

In this blog post we’ll look at the tools available in Omnis Studio to help you create the mobile or web parts of your project.

Assuming you have created the necessary classes and code to open and access your database, you can very easily build the UI for mobile or web access by creating a JavaScript Remote form. This can contain layouts for mobile and web devices, in the same form, and re-use all the same code that handles events and triggers methods. There are over 30 different, ready-made JavaScript components that you can use to build your mobile & web forms. You can build the forms from scratch, or use a wizard which will help you connect to your database and build the form, ready to use ‘out of the box’!

For more information about building the UI for your mobile & web apps in Omnis Studio you can look up the following:

  • Omnis Tutorial – steps you through the process of creating a mobile & web form and only takes about an hour, including the App Builder and form wizards; a sample database & library code is provided, see it here.
  • JavaScript Remote Forms – the online docs describe how you can create JS forms for mobile & web access; read here.
  • JavaScript Components – these are the building blocks you use to create your mobile & web UI using a remote form; there are over 30 JS components & controls including data entry fields, lists, grids, charts and more; see them here.
Plus you can try many of the components in live demos on the web, here in the JS Gallery.
  • JavaScript Wrappers – once you have built your Omnis application you can run it on the web or on a mobile device in a standard web browser, but you can also compile it into a standalone iOS or Android app for tighter integration with the phone. Read about the JavaScript Wrappers here.

Most developers working with Omnis Studio rate its enormous connectivity and integration capability as one of its greatest strengths. This connectivity has once again been significantly expanded as now Omnis developers can extend their applications so that they can access the power and flexibility of the SAP HANA® database platform. So mature Omnis Studio functionality now comes with the additional support of an underlying database operating as a hybrid system which not only carries the potential to deliver stunning performance, boundless scalability, seamless data integration and effortless real-time analytics, but also helps to streamline and simplify the generic tasks of integrating data and applications.

The implications of this potent combination for professional software developers are clear: faster development, enhanced performance, and even greater flexibility, resulting in an Omnis Studio cross-platform tool capable of delivering smarter apps within shorter timescales, without cutting corners.

What’s so special about SAP HANA®?

In-memory data storage allows SAP HANA® to take advantage of faster access and prioritised data processing, all of which takes place entirely in central memory and has very positive performance implications. And by managing data in column-based tables, rather than rows, SAP HANA® likewise achieves much faster read times. These trademark features enable the rapid processing of vast amounts of column-stored data with great precision and virtually zero latency.

An awesome combination

Combining the powerful storage and retrieval capabilities of the SAP HANA® relational database engine with the phenomenal depth of features available in Omnis Studio 10.2 builds a versatile software package of awesome power. Equipped with this formidable blend of Omnis Studio and SAP technologies, Omnis partners will now have incredible data processing speeds available at their fingertips for both web and mobile applications and for deployment in e-commerce solutions, state-of-the-art reporting, and real-time business analysis contexts.

Rapid development

Omnis Studio provides an intuitive and productive environment which offers ultra-fast prototyping, promotes development efficiency, and simplifies routine debugging and maintenance procedures. Incorporating SAP HANA®’s astounding performance capacity simply supercharges these robust features, leaving the developer free to focus on solving problems and creating effective business solutions.

The power of SAP HANA® in tandem with Omnis Studio’s renowned productivity is apparent when working on resource-hungry web and mobile apps. As of now, any apps with extensive data footprints can immediately benefit from SAP HANA®’s in-memory technology. SAP HANA® can provide an advanced, column-oriented database capable of processing all types of data while handling transactional and analytical workloads at the same time. And let’s remind ourselves, Omnis Studio’s own multi-platform profile means applications require just a one-time development before they are available for multiple deployments across any kind of platform and device.

Having a column-oriented, multi-modal database at your disposal which can rapidly process all kinds of data and perform analytical functions alongside transactional interactions is bound to make a significant contribution to the development of smarter solutions. And with the new collaboration between SAP HANA® and Omnis Studio, developers have a RAD tool with the potential to create more intelligent applications featuring advanced analytics which can inform strategic actions and real-time business decisions on the fly.

Corporate benefits

Pairing SAP HANA®’s ability to process heavy workloads in a single database system with the acclaimed development productivity of Omnis Studio saves time and developer resources, enabling businesses to focus on creating successful, leading-edge solutions in every kind of enterprise across a host of market sectors. Omnis Studio’s ‘code once’ philosophy adds the flexibility companies need to deploy apps to desktops, mobile devices and on the web, across every kind of platform.

The integration of SAP HANA®’s one unified database engine with Omnis Studio’s cross-platform development environment helps companies to develop smart, insight-driven applications based on real-time data insights, in-memory technology and machine learning, whether in the cloud or as on-premise applications. It will guarantee highly reliable, performance-focused solutions grounded in pervasive data intelligence to provide improved agility and innovation and drive faster times to market while simultaneously reducing risks, costs and complexity.

A new horizon for SAP HANA® users too

This powerful new alliance also represents a fruitful opportunity for enterprises already running SAP HANA®. With this new integration option they can take advantage of the Omnis Studio rapid application development solution. From now on, they will have the freedom and the productivity to create their own high-quality apps to run on a multitude of operating systems including Windows, Mac, iOS and Android, as they explore the huge potential of the latest version 10.2 of Omnis Studio.

The latest release of Omnis Software’s flagship application development tool Omnis Studio version 10.1 provides a greatly enhanced code editor & other tools to help application developers, together with a better user experience for their customers on desktops, web & mobile devices. A whole raft of enhancements has been added to this latest release, building on the most recent additions to the product, including the new Code Editor, to accelerate coding and application design for existing and new developers.

The enhancements in Omnis Studio 10.1 include the following:

  • Easier debugging with new Variable Panel
The Variable panel is a powerful addition to the Method Editor that allows you to view and modify variables while you debug and step through your code: as execution pauses, the panel displays the values of all the current variables, and you can drill down into the hierarchy of objects and variables (see below for further images)
  • More assistance while coding to help you code more quickly
There are many enhancements in the Code Assistant including: Method name matching to allow you to find a method name as you enter code; Command Keywords are added to a command automatically when pressing Tab; a new option Copy Value in the Variable menu allows you to copy the value of a variable
  • Faster, more optimized apps with SQL Worker Lists
You can now specify that a SQL list or row uses a SQL Worker Object (of the same DAM type as the SQL session object) to perform SQL operations asynchronously in a separate self-contained thread (or synchronously if preferred).
  • Better management for Web app sessions
Remote Tasks used with the JavaScript Client now have a concept of being ‘suspended’ to allow greater control over how client connections are managed using the new properties $suspendedtimeout and $suspendconditions
  • Improved user engagement for mobile apps with new “Toast” messages
There is a new client command to allow you to popup “Toast messages” (small temporary notifications) on the client similar to Android toast messages
  • Improved user experience with new and updated JavaScript components
The JS Video control has been rewritten to remove its reliance on jQuery, and as a consequence the control has some new properties and events; in addition, the Data Grid, Toolbar, Date Picker, and Tree List JS controls have all been enhanced
  • Better web experience on macOS with Chromium (CEF) support
The macOS version of the OBrowser window control (see below) now uses the Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF), which the Windows version of OBrowser already uses; the macOS version of OBrowser now supports the standard OBrowser CEF configuration settings using the cefSwitches configuration item within the config.json
  • Better user experience for desktop apps with new animations
There is a new library and object property, $animateui, that allows you to animate certain window class controls. Tree Lists have the new property, so when enabled the contents of a node will animate when it opens (also used in some parts of the Studio IDE such as the Method list in the Code Editor); plus the Tab Strip has some new type constants to animate the tabs. There are two new window class External Components: an iOS-style Switch control and a Multi-button

Tree list (left) and OBrowser with CEF support on macOS

Download a Free Trial of Omnis Studio 10.1

The new release is available to all supported developers (on the ODPP), or if you would like to try out all the new features, you can download it today and register for a free 90-day trial:
https://www.omnis.net/developers/free-trial/

When you pause execution of your code, e.g. at a breakpoint, the new Variable Panel in Studio 10.0.1 shows the value of all variables and other properties in the current context – you can continue to step through your code and the panel will update automatically.
The Trace Log has been added to the main Studio Browser giving you easier access to the code executed as your library starts up, for example, and to any errors.

Throughout 2017 we have successfully held courses in the Omnis Academy, in the classroom and online, and by now we have trained hundreds of new Omnis developers. We are delighted to let you know that we have created a brand new course for 2018: the new course will be rolled out over the coming weeks for classroom attendees, but for online students the course is available now!
The New Omnis Academy course was designed and created by Andreas Pfeiffer, Senior consultant with Omnis Software Germany, who has over 20 years consulting experience creating enterprise and web applications in Omnis Studio, as well as speaking at tech conferences, and teaching the in-class academy course in Europe and North America. The new Academy course is split into five parts, in which you can build a mobile app for managing orders for tables in a restaurant, called “Cucina Piccola”. There is a video for each part, and you can download a resource library, and the final Cucina Piccola app, which has forms for web and mobile. Andreas has spent many weeks planning, developing and filming the new online course – so we hope you like it and it helps you in your Omnis app development projects.

It’s a new year (happy new year readers, btw) and with it comes new resolutions, new opportunities and hopefully many new adventures! If you are an application developer you might be continually looking for new products or new ways to work, by yourself or in your team. So maybe one resolution you could make this year is to explore new technologies for creating web or mobile applications with Omnis Studio. Whether you are completely new to Omnis (maybe you just stumbled on this blog), or you have been using Omnis for many years, then we would like to suggest that now is a great time to get into the very latest version of Omnis Studio (version 8.1 & JavaScript Client), to learn new skills, and accelerate your application development onto a new level.
The Omnis Academy provides 3 days training, free of charge, in using the latest version of Omnis Studio 8.1.x, and the JavaScript Client for building web and mobile apps – the course is great for beginners to Omnis Studio (but some programming knowledge is essential), or existing Omnis developers wanting to learn about the latest release of Studio 8, or to learn about the JavaScript Client. This is your chance to learn, free of charge, how to create web and mobile apps, quickly and easily, using one of the most productive application development tools on the market: Omnis Studio.
